Sherry Moore, a thirty-something blind woman living in Baltimore, has a unique gift. She is able to relive the last 30 seconds of a deceased person's life, just by touching their hand. This talent has made her internationally famous and she is frequently called on by law enforcement and families to solve mysterious deaths. In Second Sight, Moore gets a call to go to Utah to grasp the hand of Thomas Monohan, an 80-year-old man who has recently died after nearly six decades in a vegetative state.

Moore interaction with Monohan causes another startling reaction. She is able to see after more than 30 years without use of her eyes. Amidst a dizzying new world of sight and possibilities, Moore seeks an explanation for her sudden sight. What she finds is that Private Thomas Monohan was officially declared dead in Korea in 1950 by the US Army. The soldier was found by a hospital guard in uniform wandering around the woods. He was speaking nonsense and bleeding from his eyes. Two weeks later, the guard was found dead, an apparent suicide victim.
Local legend has it that Monohan was an escaped test subject from the nearby (and now closed) secret military base, Area 17. Though the base's operations ceased decades ago, the secrets guarded there are still a threat to several powerful people. When Moore digs into the base's attempts to create a weapon more powerful than the atomic bomb, she becomes the target of a charming sociopath, a man that will stop at nothing to preserve his stepfather's legend and his inheritance.
Second Sight is the best yet of the engrossing Sherry Moore series. Shuman combines an interesting--and all too plausible--plot with the mundane details of a woman regaining her sight after 30 years and the resulting confusion and joy in life's visual pleasures. This novel is enjoyable for fans of the series as well as first time readers.
