Winning the lottery isn't always the jackpot it's purported to be. Duncan Graham, a grocery store produce manager in Brancrombe, New Hampshire, and his friends find this out in this fifth installment of the Higgins Clark holiday series. Fortunately for them, they have Carol Higgins Clark regular characters, Nora Regan Reilly and Regan Reilly and their close friend--a former lottery winner herself--Alvirah Meehan.
Bad Investment Advice
Duncan has been taking classes on how to make the most of his money. Most of the advice sounds rather obvious (turn off the lights; make one shopping trip rather than two), but when the instructors advise him to stop chipping in the dollar for the store lottery pool, he listens, even though it's something the group has been doing for years. He also listens when the advisors tell him that they've singled him out to offer him a chance to buy into their oil well investment opportunity.
Of course, the oil well is a sham, but the phony advisors also made use of Duncan's regular lottery numbers--and ended up winning the drawing--with, of course, the regular players from Duncan's store. How could he have been so stupid? As Duncan tries to make sense of what a bad turn his life has taken in the past 24 hours, he has an accident and goes missing for almost a day. As the entire community tries to find him, Duncan has a kind of "It's a Wonderful Life" moment and realizes who his true friends really are.
